Gold Medal Ales are produced monthly
in recognition of some of the 'greats' of history. Explosions in coal mines caused by methane being ignited by a naked flame led to many deaths. Scientist and member of the Royal Institution, Sir Humphrey Davy discovered that a flame enclosed by a fine mesh was safe and he demonstrated his 'safety lamp' to the Royal Society in 1815. Ironically deaths increased after the lamps' introduction due to the meshes becoming damaged, but a modified version became a great life saver. More recently the Olympic Flame was transported in one. |
